It is kept at a regulated depth of 93 m. The reservoir starts from the dam at the town of Zeya, fills a 40 kilometres (25 mi) narrow valley and then spreads out into a large lake. The Baikal Amur Mainline runs along the north shore where there is a 1,100 metres (0.68 mi) bridge.
